Gordon Food Service

Marketing Intern

May - August 2022 • Wyoming, MI

What I liked

The company culture is awesome. I met so many great people outside of the marketing department who will definitely continue to support my career. Everyone loves to network and help each other. It's common to sit with a different person at lunch and just get to know them. I also really enjoyed the HR internship program. They hosted great events like an etiquette dinner and presentations about how to have courageous conversations.

What I wish was different

The job listing was extremely vague and only said "Marketing Intern" with general responsibilities. I had no idea what I was signing up for nor did my hiring manager in the interview. I was placed in a marketing role I had 0 interest to do (event planning / management). I wish I could've known the responsibilities before accepting the internship so I could gauge if the primary responsibilities would further my career. I found out what I would be doing on day 1 and was not able to switch responsibilities or take a different role. Also, there were too many marketing interns and not enough work to be done. Oftentimes I would be forced to come to work and literally do nothing but refresh my inbox (which they knew) because nobody had a project for me to work on.

Advice

Go introduce yourself to everyone and anyone. You will find awesome mentors who will uplift you and give you advice. This is a great networking opportunity.

User Experience Designer Intern

May - August 2019 • Wyoming, MI

What I liked

I learned so much about this new field and gained experience in a corporate design environment which has really set me up well for a job after college. This internship also helped me feel so much more confident about what I want to do after college, which is UX design.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more opportunities for the GFS interns to have social events and get to know each other better, we were kind of separated within each of our departments.

Advice

I would tell anyone that’s currently in college to try as hard as you can to find an internship before you graduate. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know, but having an internship helps you figure out what you like or don’t like and gives you a taste of what the rest of your life could be like.

Software Development Intern

May - August 2017 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I got the oppurtunity to learn and use new technologies to make Web Applications and Android Apps. I learned skills that they dont teach at school. Thousands of employees are using the apps I wrote. Their headquarters is amazing too.

What I wish was different

Honestly nothing, it was a great experience for me.

Advice

Even if you have never used a technology like Spring framework or AngularJS, do not just sit around waiting for someone to help you. Take charge and ambition and go get help through your coworkers or online tutorials. I didnt know these technologies before my internship, but now I do.
