Field/Office Engineer Intern

What I liked

The degree of responsibility immediately assigned to you. You gain an incredible amount of experience doing hands-on work, and being held responsible for deadlines, submissions, quality of work - just like the full-time engineers.

What I wish was different

The interns are assigned to specific projects, so there was not a lot of opportunity to interact with interns throughout the company, aside from the final presentations. I wish there were more social events outside of work that were encouraged.

Advice

Be open and versatile to every opportunity. Accept the overtime opportunities, if offered. Don't become complacent with doing just what you're told; go the extra mile and find small ways to improve the traditional practices in your office/job-site.

Structural Drafter

What I liked

Kiewit has an incredible internship program. I was doing real work on muli million and billion-dollar projects. I was treated like a full-time employee and was given the same responsibilities as one. No coffee runs or making copies. They also provide free housing just across the street from the office, so no commute and the culture are amazing. Tons of learning opportunities and you get to go to outings with the project team, baseball, soccer, BBQs, they really keep interns busy and having fun.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have started projects a little sooner in the internship, but I understand there is a training period and they have to figure out what work they want their interns to get done.

Advice

Be ready to take on the challenges given to you and ask questions.

Human Resources Intern

What I liked

I liked how all of the work I did contributed to the greater good of the organization. I worked on real projects that were not just busy work and I had the opportunity to present my work to upper management. I worked in 4 different rotations and this summer I will be in yet another rotation. Kiewit provides so many opportunities and they work so hard to give their interns as much experience as possible.

What I wish was different

I wish they had been a little less demanding of my time during the school year. One of my rotations I did while also in school and it made it hard to balance everything. This might have just been my department because I know of other Kiewit interns who did not have as many working hours as I did.

Advice

Take all of the opportunities they offer you! I got to go on several business trips to other states which was probably my favorite opportunity! I also got to meet with upper level management and executive members because of this. Kiewit offers their interns so much, so take advantage of all of it!

Field Engineer

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunities for growth available at Kiewit. They had a great mentor program for their interns, so each intern was paired with a full-time field engineer to answer any questions they had and help them grow. I learned a lot throughout my internship and gained a lot of experience of what it was like working in the field at a construction site.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been on a project more closely related to my interests. I was placed in the underground pipe crew for a project to build a petrochemical plant, but I am more interested in transportation engineering and infrastructure projects.

Advice

I would recommend spending as much time as possible in the field when working as an intern on construction projects. You will gain a lot of respect from the entire crew, and you will learn a lot more from what is going on out in the field that you can use later on when you are working in the office.

Field engineer

What I liked

I got to learn what my future job will be like with real world application. I was treated as another member of the team and had to contribute just as much.

What I wish was different

The official position is field/office engineer but the job site I was at originally had set me up to just be in the office.

Advice

You will work long hours but will get paid very well. This isn't a job to mess around with, you are expected to contribute to the construction process as a full time employee

Mechanical Design Intern

What I liked

Kiewit was very helpful in preparing the interns for their specific tasks. From orientation to specific training courses, Interns were given plenty of time to grasp the ropes of a normal day in the offices of Kiewit. Interns were also treated as if they were full-time employees with the tasks they were given and their involvement on projects.

What I wish was different

The training course for Smart 3D was very poorly written and taught. The instructor was not much help with questions and told us to just skip a step in the manual if we found something too difficult. The training course, or lack there of, made for a slow start when work began to arrive for Smart 3D.

Advice

Interns: Get to know everyone on your project, establish professional relations, partake in every opportunity you can, and don't be afraid to ask questions, just check your resources first.

What I liked

Alot of my tasks involved me to expand my knowledge and apply what I learned in school to different projects.

What I wish was different

I got out of the office more.

Advice

Try to take on as much as possible and do not be affraid to fail. At least you will learn all the different tasks going on. This way you will find what you like to do and wont be in the dark of all the things happening.

Structural Designer

What I liked

The thing that impressed me the most was the overall cohesion of the company. Most of the firms aren’t well connected with various parts of their branches; i.e. design to engineering to construction, Kuwait is different in that aspect as they tie all parties together to create a super team that operates effortlessly and efficiently.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more getting to know the people around the workplace. They had a “Bootcamp” day wee they introduce everyone but once work got busy there was little time to actually go and meet the people who you work with.

Advice

Don’t come in cocky about what you know, show up ready to learn and be taught at the highest peak of learning by a career focused team.

What I liked

Kiewit is a really great company. They encourage your personal and professional development as an intern and even as a full-time employee. They really care about their employees and offer competitive pay and other great benefits.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been an opportunity to spend more time with the other interns.

Always be enthusiastic about learning! You might not always know everything, but they are always willing to teach you, so be sure to ask questions.

What I liked

The people I worked with were incredible and the work I did was very meaningful. They gave a lot of opportunities to increase my learning and social network with employees and other interns.

What I wish was different

Sat closer to my peer mentor and had more opportunities to work on different deliverables.

Advice

Be open to learn and ask questions. Don’t sit and wait for someone to tell you what to do, it’s very impressive for an intern to take the initiative to get the most out of their time at an internship.

What I liked

Hands-on experience, threw me in and gave me tasks/responsibilities immediately but were always available if I had any questions, helped me have more confidence in my engineering skills.

Great everyone you meet as if they know more than you. Learn as much as you can, do research, write things down and take photos, don't be afraid to speak up, have confidence in yourself.

Field Engineer Intern

What I liked

I was given responsibilities that contributed to the project and wasn't lead around the whole time being told what to do. I also got to work in a small office where I got to know everyone really well. I also had opportunities to learn from tradesmen about what they were doing on the project and how they managed their crews to those tasks done each day.

What I wish was different

I was the only intern, which was okay, but kind of wish I had someone my age there to hangout with and work through stuff together rather than just the full time employers I worked with everyday.

Advice

If your not sure the office is for you, I highly recommend a Kiewit Field Engineer Internship. It isn't easy, but you learn a lot in a short amount of time, make great connections with a massive construction company, and learn if you really would rather being in the field as oppose to the office.

What I wish was different

- Pay raises barely cover inflation - Promotion/change in job role has no impact on pay (no raise w/ promotion) - Company threatens to take away stock stock from employees if they decline an inconvenient/undesirable work assignment

Advice

Great company starting out - the training and experience you receive during your first few years will put you at the forefront of the construction industry and make you a valuable and desirable employee.
