Product Specialist

June - September 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

Facebook has great benefits, and great people! Also, they treat you like an employee as opposed to an intern, and they give you a lot of responsibility.

What I wish was different

Shorter internship, because 3 months was quite a long time.

Advice

Take initiative, and don't be afraid to share your own ideas.

What I liked

The mentorship, product experience, free foods, lots of perks, free housing.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd spent more time hanging with fellow interns outside of work.

Advice

NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK. Ask for help. Come prepared to meetings.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

They gave the interns many of the benefits of a full time employee . I did Facebook University for Enginners which is a great pipeline program that I would recommend for frosh and sophomores interested in software engineering. I loved the experience I got working with new tools and in a new environment.

What I wish was different

I wish I had met more full time employee and while I worked there but I did get the chance to meet my manager and some of his coworkers.

Data Analytics Intern

June - August 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

Facebook is a fantastic company to work for. It has a very open but fast-paced working environment where you learn a lot from the best in the industry and get the chance to apply your skills to solutions that affect hundreds of millions of people. The employee benefits are great too.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to work there.

Advice

Go for it with an open mind and positive attitude. Make sure you get some rest in-between school and the internship so that you start with a lot of energy. Keep your concentration up and take time to review your performance regularly and rest when necessary.

Data Science Intern

June - September 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

The data science role at Facebook is an embedded data science role, so you work closely within a specific team. This is a really interesting role for anyone who is curious how data science can be used to directly shape product strategy.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to do more rigorous analytical work. There wasn't much work involving more rigorous/mathematical data science

Advice

Make a strong effort to get to know your team and how you can best support them. A successful internship will give you valuable experience with not only your personal intern project but also with how a team operates.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

They did an excellent job of matching students to their interests. I had a love for AI and was placed in the machine learning division and had a lot of my team mates working on research.

What I wish was different

Nothing really.

Advice

It is valuable to communicate with your team and meet other interns and employees.

I loved the opportunities for learning, through talks with company leaders (intern talks with Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, Kevin Systrom, etc.) and through the project.

Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2016 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

It paid well. The housing was nice and free. I lived in Mountain View, which was next to the Bay, so I could go out on runs. My fellow interns were nice.

What I wish was different

I wish my project had been more interesting. I had to write testing code -- for network switches.... Also, the company felt very insulated from the outside world. My internship became my life, and it wasn't a fun job either.

Advice

If you're into theoretical CS, then network testing is (most probably) NOT for you. If you're going to intern at Facebook, choose your team wisely.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2017 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

The mentorship was great! I learned a lot through my manager who was extremely patient and helped answer any questions I had. It was also cool to get to work closely in a team on a project that had the potential to have real impact at the company.

What I wish was different

I felt like my specific team was a little more insular and I do wish I was able to have more of a say in what my project was. Instead, interns there are more-or-less given a project. While the project is assigned based on a pre-internship survey, it would have been nice to have more autonomy over what I worked on ultimately.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Whether to your team or your manager! They don't expect you to know everything and it would be way better for getting more progress on your project. Plus, most full-time employees are more than happy to help!

Global Marketing Solutions Intern

June - August 2019 • Austin, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed the company culture, specifically the full-time employees working within my vertical. They were really eager to help us. Despite the fact that they knew some of us would go elsewhere or jump between tech companies, they made sure to answer our questions, were available for meetings, and connected with us online. This was a value that was shared throughout the company and made me view the company in a new light as well as created an amazing workspace.

What I wish was different

The length of the internship. I wish it had been longer!

Advice

Be ok not knowing the answer, the learning process is the experience.
