Campus Recreation – Landsports Trip Leader (ORec)
Be part of the team that keeps Gamecocks active, connected, and thriving! As an Outdoor Recreation Adventure Trip Leader, you’ll use your passion for the outdoors to lead fellow students on a variety of regional Outdoor Recreation Adventure Trips. This position plans and executes 3-4 trips per semester under the guidance of an ORec Manager and/or professional staff. Successful applicants spend their first semester as a Trip Assistant training, shadowing, and earning certifications necessary for this high responsibility work. This opening is specifically for those interested in leading land based trips: hiking, backpacking, camping, rock climbing, bouldering, etc.
Area/Position Primary Responsibilities
Trip Preparation - paperwork, equipment, route planning, meetings
Trip Clean up - equipment, paperwork, debrief
Teaching lessons and instructional sessions on trips/clinics
Managing inherent risks on outdoor trips including weather, allergies, steep/loose terrain, hypothermia, backcountry hazards, interpersonal conflict, etc.
Building relationships with trip participants
Driving vehicles and trailers after training
Prompt and professional communication via email and Microsoft Teams
Requirements
Quickly learning outdoor leadership skills including navigation (maps etc), LNT, group facilitation, backcountry cooking, weather assessment, etc.
Working some weekend/evening/break shifts.
Working outdoors in varied conditions (hot, humid, cold, rain, snow, buggy).
Physical fitness beyond the base level of participation (e.g. carrying extra packweight, evacuating participants).
Attending monthly meetings, held on a Thursday night each month.
Attending various trainings for ORec and Adventure Trip employees including: ORec Basics, WFA and CPR certifications (during the semester or prior to the semester start), and Campus Rec Training held the weekend before classes start each semester.
