Animal Care Assistant

 

Overview

 Animal Care Assistant chief responsibility will be to provide for the health, care and safety of the PAALS Assistance Dogs in training housed on-site and for the security and appearance of the property.   Responsibilities will vary with current needs of staff, dogs, season of the year. ACA reports directly to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities

 

1.         To thoroughly clean and disinfect the dog housing areas of the facility during evening and early morning hours to ensure health of all puppies and dogs.

 

2.       Assist with recording and scheduling veterinary appointments and keeping medical records up to date.

 

3.       To observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs

of illness, disease unusual activity and discontent and report information to trainers and

Executive Director.

 

4.         Assist with breeding program and puppy care as needed.

 

5.       To exercise dogs as needed.

 

6.       To be prepared to handle emergency situations in the housing facility.

 

7.       To keep food prep area and storage areas clean and neat.

 

8.       Administer medications, heartworm, and flea/tick treatments as needed.

 

9.       To wash and dry towels and blankets.

 

10.     To wash and sterilize water and food bowls.

 

11.     To perform general cleaning as needed.

 

16.       To keep equipment and tools put away in proper storage areas

 

17.     Other duties assigned as required.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  1. Exceptional interpersonal skills and helpful disposition
  2. Ability to work independently
  3. Ability to be flexible and handle multiple tasks.
  4. Knowledge of common dog diseases, symptoms and means of transmission
  5. Detail-Oriented
  6. Physical Effort: Often requires lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 40 lbs. Frequently requires handling of materials up to 20 lbs. Additionally, handle dogs weighing up to 120 lbs.
  7. Knowledge of: Cleaning and disinfecting methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
  8. Knowledge of: Basic animal behavior

 

Hours: Mon-Fri availability depending on your schedule (8am-6pm hours of operation - 20 hours per week)

Pay: $8.00 per hour
