Youth Mentor Internship
Description
The Youth Mentor Internship is responsible for the daily supervision of 10-20 program participants grades K-12. Position duration is based on the academic goals of the Intern. S/he is responsible for assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of program components and activities. The Intern guides the academic and social development of children; ensuring a safe, enriching, and healthy learning environment. Youth Mentor Interns use a variety of resources, provided by the Site Director/Program Coordinator to introduce new skills throughout the execution of activities. To accomplish this, Youth Mentor Interns participate in ongoing professional development and planning sessions with the Site Director/Program Coordinator on a weekly basis. School year hours are afternoons, Monday - Friday and Summer hours are full days. Interns are expected to participate in site meetings, field trips, monthly staff meetings, Family Night celebrations, and other intermittent special events. The YMCA Site Director will be responsible for regular documentation of the Intern's progress toward education goals throughout their time with the YMCA.
Qualifications
- At least 18 years of age with a high school diploma, or its equivalent.
- Understanding of elementary and/or middle school youth, their behavior and development.
- Interest in the development of age appropriate curriculum activities (e.g. arts, recreation/wellness, service, STEM, leading group discussion/activities/skill building) and uses of appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Ability to effectively manage youth and behaviors in a large group setting.
- Warm and friendly personality, positive role model, and must possess skills in oral and written communication.
