2019 U.S. Women’s Open Championship Administration Intern

The U.S. Women’s Open Championship internship is a great way to gain valuable experience in sports management. Whether you work in Championship Administration or Operations, you will gain valuable experience and see firsthand how an exemplary golf championship is conducted.

 

The 74th U.S. Women’s Open Championship will be held at the Country Club of Charleston which will be hosting its first U.S. Women’s Open Championship and its second USGA Championship.

 

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:

The Championship Office is a fast-paced working environment. Intern must have the ability to work under pressure and handle many tasks at one time. Each day brings new challenges and the intern must have top-notch organizational and communication skills. Daily, the intern will find themselves working in a typical office environment, but significant work will be done in exterior environs as well. The ability to handle physical tasks such as lifting boxes and manual labor may be required at times. In the weeks leading up to the championship, the intern will work at least (40) hour work weeks; however, as we grow closer to the championship, work weeks will lengthen to (60+) hours and will include weekends and holidays. An internship with the United States Golf Association and the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open Championship is a tremendous first step for a career in the fields of special event management and professional sports.

 

The Championship Administration Intern will assist the Championship Manager and Championship Coordinator with Championship Office administrative duties. Intern will have responsibilities during the periods of advance preparation and setup, the week of the championship and the post-championship breakdown.

 

CHAMPIONSHIP OFFICE

The Championship Administration Intern will assist Championship Staff with responsibilities relating to the Volunteer Program, Player Services, community relations and the host club. Such duties include, but are not limited to;

  • Assisting with volunteer training, helping organize materials for credential packets and supply boxes, and assisting with the distribution of other important information
  • Assisting Committee Chairs and Championship Staff with tasks relating to spectator, hospitality, scoring and competition services.
  • Helping with neighborhood and community relations and logistics
  • Assist with the setup, organization and tear down of the volunteer, player, and caddie areas as well as any other facility in need of assistance.

ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS
  • The Championship Administration Intern will assist with the administrative tasks of the Championship Office. Such tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Answering phones, preparing mailings, opening incoming mail
  • Answering incoming emails to the 2019 U.S Women’s Open email account
  • Keeping the Championship Office neat, clean and organized
  • Managing the concerns, questions and requests of volunteers and fans before and during the championship;
  • UPS shipping and receiving of championship supplies

SPECIAL PROJECTS
  • The Championship Administration Intern will handle special projects which will arise in the weeks leading up to championship and during the event. These projects could include, but are not limited to:
  • Coordinating trips to and from specified destinations;
  • Organizing the exchange and distribution of volunteer apparel.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE USGA:
  • Ability to work long and strenuous hours (40 – 60+ hour work weeks)
  • Effective communication with a wide variety of individuals involved in a national championship
  • Resourceful, presentable, courteous, friendly and organized
  • Good follow-up skills and ability to handle issues quickly and calmly
  • Ability to work independently and support the team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software – above average knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Publisher
  • Ability to prepare presentations to include PowerPoint and printed material
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and execute detailed plans – able to anticipate and analyze problems and provide logical solutions
  • Ability to work well under pressure
