The Carolinas Integrated Sciences & Assessments (CISA) program, an applied climate research group supporting climate adaptation activities in the Carolinas, seeks a student research assistant to assist with a variety of programmatic tasks. CISA is based in the USC Department of Geography.

Established in 2003, CISA is part of a nationwide network of 11 regional teams working to expand and build the nation’s capacity to prepare for and adapt to climate variability and change. The CISA team focuses on the connections between climate, water resources, public health, and coastal management. Funding comes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Program Office. Find more information about our work at www.cisa.sc.edu.

Research assistant tasks will include, but are not limited to, development of communications and outreach materials related to climate change, impacts, and adaptation, data entry for a program-wide network analysis, logistical support for climate and coastal adaptation workshop planning, and other project-specific tasks as needed. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in monthly team calls to hear updates about climate resilience activities across the Carolinas and presentations of team members’ work.

Successful candidates will demonstrate proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, professional social media account management, and excellent written communication skills. Experience or coursework with climate, coasts, and water resources issues, including drought is preferred. Experience with the Adobe Suite (e.g., InDesign, Dreamweaver, Photoshop) is a plus.

This position is available for the Spring 2019 at a rate of $12/hour. Candidates should be able to work a minimum of 8 hours/week. There may be opportunities for continued employment or internships in climate science, depending on the students’ skills, performance, and CISA’s program needs.

Interested students should send a resume, transcript (unofficial is acceptable), brief writing sample, and cover letter to CISA Program Manager, Amanda Farris (afarris.sc.edu).
