Law Enforcement Officer

 

SUMMARY

 

Under direct supervision of master police officer/corporal or sergeant, performs general police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances and does related work as required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Include the following. May require evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

 

Ø  Enforces the laws and ordinances of the city and all other pertinent laws.

Ø  Patrols assigned areas during a specific period on foot or in motorized police equipment.

Ø  Checks doors and window and examines premises or unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect any suspicious conditions.

Ø  Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints and make arrest or persons who violate laws and ordinances.

Ø  Accompanies prisoners to headquarters, jail or court and appears in court as arresting officer.

Ø  Direct traffic and either arrests or gives violation tickets to those who break traffic laws.

Ø  Checks automobiles parking in restricted areas as directed, give all possible assistance and prepare necessary reports.

Ø  Maintains order in crowds and attends parades, funeral or other public gatherings.

Ø  Observes for stolen cars and wanted or missing persons.

Ø  Makes investigation and enforces city and state laws pertaining to juvenile offenders.

Ø  Serves warrants, gives advice on laws, ordinances and general information to the public.

Ø  Acts for police Master Police Officer or Sergeant in his absence as directed.

Ø  Maintains records, prepares reports and performs related clerical duties.

Ø  Perform related duties as required.

EMERGENCY RESPONSIBILITY 

 

Work operations are subject to frequent, abrupt, and unexpected changes in deadlines, volume of work and sudden emergencies due to uncontrollable or unpredictable circumstances.  In the event of major storms or other emergency situations, this position may be subject to 24-hour shifts or other emergency schedules that are necessary to meet the City and Department’s needs.

This position allows for decision-making which could directly or indirectly affect the citizens and community which the officer serves.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

 

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

 

Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree, Associate’s Degree or High School Diploma/GED Plus

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

 

Ø  Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license

Ø  Must possess a valid SCCJA Police Officer Certification

 

COMPUTER SKILLS

 

Must possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel or similar software.

 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

 

Must possess the ability to effectively communicate/respond both verbally and in written form with all types and classes of people in an effective manner.

 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

 

Must possess the ability to perform basic mathematical functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and currency.

 

REASONING ABILITY

 

Must possess the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to solve a wide range of intellectual and practical problems where only limited information may be available.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

 

Ø  While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to act under dangerous and often hostile conditions.  The employee could be called upon to regularly lift and/or move objects, which are equal to or often times above his/her own body weight. 

Ø  They must be physically fit and possess endurance and stamina.

Ø  Specific vision abilities required by the job require the ability to adjust focus.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

 

Ø  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Ø  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to outdoor environment and various weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderately noisy.

 

 

SAFETY

 

The employee must establish and maintain a positive behavior toward occupational safety and health to ensure that all operations are performed with the utmost regard for safety and health.  They must report occupational injury or illness immediately to their supervisor to insure that the First Report of injury/Illness form is submitted within eight (8) hours of the occurrence.
